If you are reading this, you are probably curious about hypnotherapy but have not yet taken the step of booking a session. That hesitation is completely normal. Most people arrive at their first session with a mixture of hope and nervousness — hopeful that something might finally shift, and nervous because they do not quite know what to expect. This article walks you through exactly what a first session feels like, from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, so you can approach it with a clearer picture and a calmer mind.

I want to be honest about what this article is and is not. It is a genuine description of how I work in my Bear Creek practice — the structure, the tone, the physical experience. It is not a promise that your session will be identical, because every session is shaped around the person in front of me. But it should give you a real sense of the journey, enough to take the uncertainty out of that first step.

Before You Arrive: The Free 60-Minute Consultation

Your first experience with me is not actually a hypnotherapy session — it is a free, 60-minute consultation. This is a conversation, nothing more. We sit down together — in person at my Bear Creek office or over a secure video call — and talk through what has brought you here. I will ask about what you would like to change, what you have tried before, and what you are hoping for. You do not need to prepare anything formal or have the right words. You just need to show up and be yourself.

The consultation serves two purposes. First, it gives you a chance to ask every question you have — about hypnotherapy, about how I work, about the six-session programme, about anything at all. Second, it gives us both a chance to sense whether the approach feels right. There is no pressure to continue. If hypnotherapy is not the right fit, or if now is not the right time, that is completely fine. The consultation is free for exactly this reason — so you can make an informed decision without any financial commitment.

    03

Arriving at the Session: Setting the Tone

If you decide to go ahead, your first hypnotherapy session begins like any calm, unhurried appointment. You arrive at my practice at 6999 US Hwy 421 in Bear Creek, or you settle in at home for an online session. There is no dramatic preamble, no dimly lit room with swirling lights. The space is warm, quiet and ordinary — a comfortable chair, soft natural light, a cup of tea if you would like one. The goal of the first few minutes is simply to help you feel settled and safe.

We begin by talking. I will recap what we discussed in the consultation, check in on how you have been since, and answer any new questions that have come up. This is not small talk — it is part of the work. Feeling safe and understood is the foundation everything else is built on. If you are nervous, that is completely welcome. Most people are, and it does not affect the process at all. I will never rush you into the hypnotic state before you are ready.

    04

What the Hypnotic State Actually Feels Like

When it is time to begin, I will guide you into a state of relaxed, focused attention. I will ask you to get comfortable, close your eyes, and follow my voice. What happens next is not dramatic. You will not lose consciousness, black out, or feel as though you are somewhere else. You will simply feel progressively more relaxed — your body settling, your breathing slowing, your mind becoming quieter. Most people describe it as feeling like a very pleasant daydream, or the lovely drifting sensation you have just before falling asleep, except you are not asleep.

    What it feels like

You remain fully aware of everything around you. You can hear my voice, you can hear sounds in the room, and you can open your eyes at any time. You are not under anyone's control. You are deeply relaxed, and yet more focused than usual — calm, present, and completely in charge.

The depth of the state varies from person to person and even from session to session. Some people go very deep; others stay quite light. Both are perfectly fine — the therapeutic work happens in either state. What matters is not how deep you go, but that you feel comfortable and safe. If at any point you want to adjust your position, open your eyes, or take a break, you simply do. The state is something you allow, not something imposed on you.

    05

What Happens During the Session: The Therapeutic Work

Once you are in the relaxed state, the therapeutic work begins. This is where the session moves beyond simple relaxation into something more purposeful. I will use suggestions, reflections and sometimes gentle visualisations, all tailored to what you want to change and the language you naturally use. The suggestions are collaborative — they are shaped by what we discussed beforehand and what you have told me about your goals. Nothing is generic or scripted.

You are not passive during this part. Your mind is actively engaged, processing and responding to what is being offered. Sometimes clients find that insights or feelings surface — a memory, a realisation, a shift in perspective. Other times, the experience is quieter and more subtle. Both are valuable. The work is not about dramatic revelations; it is about gently helping your mind adopt a new, more helpful default. The session unfolds at your pace, and I am right there with you throughout.

If you are curious about how this works for a specific concern, my anxiety hypnotherapy page describes the full six-session journey in detail.

    06

Coming Back and Closing the Session

When the session is drawing to a close, I will gently guide you back to full waking awareness. This is a gradual process — I will count or simply invite you to bring your attention back to the room, open your eyes, and take your time. Most people feel calm, clear and pleasantly rested afterwards, rather than groggy. You will not need to recover or sleep it off. You will be perfectly capable of driving, working, or going about the rest of your day.

We will take a few minutes to talk about the experience. You can share as much or as little as you like — there is no pressure to analyse or dissect everything. I will let you know what I noticed and what we might focus on next time. This is also a good moment to ask any questions that came up during the session. The closing conversation is brief but important — it helps integrate the work and gives you a clear sense of what to expect as the programme continues.

    07

What the Six-Session Programme Looks Like From Here

Your first session is the opening chapter of a structured six-session programme, not a standalone event. Each session builds on the last, layering the work gradually so the changes have room to settle and deepen. The first session focuses on foundations — building a sense of safety, learning to settle your nervous system, and beginning the therapeutic work. Subsequent sessions explore the patterns behind what you want to change, strengthen new responses, and consolidate the changes so they last beyond the programme.

All six sessions are live and one-to-one, in person at my Bear Creek office or online across North Carolina. There are no audio recordings — each session is a real, personal conversation between us. The programme is $995 for six sessions, or $199 per individual session, paid by cash or bank transfer. You can read the full breakdown on the pricing page. Whether you live in Goldston, Siler City, or further afield, online sessions make the programme accessible wherever you are.

How to Prepare for Your First Session

There is very little you need to do to prepare, which is part of what makes the process approachable. Wear comfortable clothes. Eat something light beforehand so you are not hungry or too full. Avoid caffeine right before the session if you can — it can make it harder to settle. If you are coming in person, allow a little extra time so you do not arrive rushed. If you are online, find a quiet, private space where you will not be disturbed, and make sure your device is charged and your connection is stable.

Beyond that, the best preparation is simply to arrive as you are. You do not need to have your problem perfectly articulated, or a clear goal mapped out, or any particular frame of mind. If you are nervous, that is fine. If you are sceptical, that is fine too. If you have tried other things and feel a bit deflated, that is completely understandable. The session meets you wherever you are. The only thing that helps is a general willingness to engage — and even that can be quiet and tentative to begin with.

Your first hypnotherapy session is not something to fear or to over-prepare for. It is a calm, supportive, and surprisingly ordinary experience — a conversation that deepens into a relaxed, focused state, where the real work can begin. The most common thing I hear afterwards is, "That was nothing like I expected — it was so much gentler than I thought it would be."

If you are ready to find out for yourself, the first step is a free, no-pressure consultation. You can call me to arrange it, in person at my Bear Creek office or online. There is no obligation to continue — just a warm, honest conversation about whether the six-session programme might be the right fit for you. Sometimes the hardest part is picking up the phone, and that is often the moment everything begins to shift.

    Change can feel possible again.
